Family Violence Prevention Week is 17-23 October 2011

Every October, Canadian Forces (CF) communities across the country Take a Stand Against Family Violence. Coinciding with the YWCA’s Week Without Violence, this CF-wide campaign reaches out to all military families, personnel and service providers to raise awareness about family violence prevention.

Now in its fifth year, the Take a Stand campaign continues to spread the message that family violence prevention is the responsibility of the entire CF community. The Take a Stand campaign addresses family violence with tailored education and prevention strategies, and stresses the importance of responding to incidents of violence appropriately, responsibly and respectfully.

“Family violence prevention and awareness is key to building strong, healthy CF communities,” says Celine Thompson, Director Military Family Services (DMFS).  “Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) staff, along with other helping professionals, plays a key role in this shared responsibility and are encouraged to be actively involved in the Take a Stand campaign in their communities.”

General awareness presentations for families, community members, CF personnel and CF leadership are available to promote family violence prevention during campaign week and throughout the year.  All MFRC are encouraged to use these presentations as a part of their local campaigns to increase awareness and encourage community conversations about this often-taboo topic. All three presentations are locally-customizable, and available for download from our website here.

As in previous years, DMFS has partnered with CF Health Promotion to deliver posters and brochures to Family Crisis Teams in each CF community.  These materials are at all Health Promotion offices at each CF base now. MFRC staff is asked to connect with their local Health Promotion partner to obtain the materials they require.

Please continue to use the supplies on hand in addition to the materials arriving this year as materials have not changed from previous years.
